Bronze plate mail is a type of body armor that appears in NetHack. It is made of copper.
Generation
Bronze plate mail makes up 23⁄1000 (2.3%) of all armor that is randomly generated on the floor, in general shops or as death drops. Used armor dealerships and antique weapon outlets can stock bronze plate mail.
Player monster barbarians, knights, clerics, and valkyries have an effective 23⁄574 chance (roughly ~4.01%) of forcing plate mail in place of their initial body armor.[2][3][4][5]
Description
While worn, bronze plate mail provides 6 base AC and MC1.
Strategy
Bronze plate mail offers 1 less base AC and a lower level of magic cancellation than standard plate mail for the same amount of weight, with its only advantage being immunity to erosion by rust (but not corrosion). A dwarvish mithril-coat offers the same AC as bronze plate mail along with MC2 for 1⁄3 of the weight, while an elven mithril-coat offers 1 less point of AC alongside MC2 for the same weight and can be safely enchanted to +5.
History
Bronze plate mail first appears in NetHack 1.3d. From this version to NetHack 3.4.3, including some variants based on those versions, bronze plate mail does not offer any magic cancellation.
Variants
In NetHack variants that include object materials systems, bronze plate mail is usually removed, with plate mail that is made of copper providing many of the same characteristics (if not slightly improved ones).
SLASH'EM
In SLASH'EM, bronze plate mail does not grant any magic cancellation while worn.
dNetHack
In dNetHack, notdNetHack and notnotdNetHack, bronze plate mail is renamed to archaic plate mail.
SlashTHEM
In SlashTHEM, in addition to SLASH'EM details, githyanki pirates generate with bronze plate mail as in dNetHack.
GnollHack
In GnollHack, bronze plate mail has its weight increased to 500 aum, but also grants a magic cancellation level of 8 and can be safely enchanted to +6 (which grants it another 2 levels of MC). Like normal plate mail, it has a spellcasting penalty of 300%, reducing the range of somatic spells that the hero can successfully cast by six levels.
